Responding to queries from opposition legislators Anil Parab and Satyajeet Tambe in the legislative council, CM Shinde stated that work is progressing at a rapid pace, with the road scheduled to open by May 31.
This 10.58-km-long high-speed corridor will link the Princess Street Flyover (Marine Drive) in South Mumbai to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) at Worli through a network of arterial roads, underground tunnels, and traffic interchanges.
The project is being developed in four segments. As per BMC officials, in the initial segment between Priyadarshini Park and Baroda Palace, 83.82% of the work has been completed. Package-2, from Baroda Palace to Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is 69.46% complete, and the fourth package from Princess Street Flyover (Marine Drive) to Priyadarshini Park is 90.77% complete.
A significant feature of this project is the pair of tunnels beneath the Arabian Sea near Girgaon Chowpatty, making it India’s pioneering undersea tunnel system.
The 2.07-km twin tunnel system stretches from Priyadarshini Park to Chhoti Chowpatty at Marine Drive, near the iconic Chowpatty beach at Girgaum.
These twin tunnels were excavated using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Mavala, after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Mountain warfare experts. With a diameter of 12.19 meters, the TBM Mavala is the largest tunnel-boring machine ever employed in India and was manufactured by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. (CRCHI).
Upon completion, the initial phase of the coastal road, estimated at Rs 12,500 crore, will accelerate commuting between the suburbs and South Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), responsible for executing the MCRP, has chosen four infrastructure firms to construct the northward extension of the Coastal road, connecting Versova in the western suburbs to Dahisar at the northernmost tip of Mumbai.
The civic body divided the 22.93 km six-lane Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR) into six packages — A, B, C, D, E, and F — and invited tenders for all six packages collectively in August 2023. The project, costing Rs 16,621 crore, has a construction deadline of four years.
According to the BMC, APCO Infratech has been awarded the works for packages A and F, while J Kumar Infra projects in a joint venture with NCC Limited secured package B. Similarly, Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) have been finalized for packages C and D, while Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has been chosen for package E.

]]>Project 1: Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)
NMIA, one of the world’s largest greenfield airports developed by CIDCO, will mark India’s first urban multi-airport system, created in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. The proposed NMIA is designed with two parallel and independent runways for simultaneous operations, accompanied by full-length parallel taxiways on either side. With a projected capacity of handling at least 60 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo annually, NMIA aims to alleviate the traffic burden on Mumbai Airport. A CIDCO official mentioned, “Phase-I of the airport will commence soon, and the inaugural flight is anticipated by the end of 2024.”
Proposed Connectivity Plan includes:
Project 2: Water Transport, Nerul
The Nerul passenger water terminal is fully constructed and prepared for passenger transport operation, awaiting action by the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Operationalization is hinted at by 2024. Part of the Eastern Waterfront project under the central government’s inland water transport development policy, CIDCO has finished building a jetty at Nerul and a marina at Belapur, estimated at a cost of around Rs 150 crore. This terminal will substantially reduce travel time between Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai, as well as between Navi Mumbai and the Konkan region.
Key Features include:
Project 3: Kharghar Golf Course
CIDCO has initiated work to upgrade the Kharghar golf course to international standards, expanding the number of holes from 11 to 18. The new course is projected to become operational in the upcoming year, estimated at a cost of Rs 50.35 crore. The golf course aims to elevate Navi Mumbai’s stature in the golfing world while enhancing residents’ quality of life. Upon completion, a private operator will oversee the golf course for a predetermined duration.
The Project includes:
Project 4: Transit Oriented Housing
CIDCO plans to introduce a new housing scheme under the Pradanmantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for economically weaker sections and lower-income groups. The scheme focuses on ‘Transit Oriented Development,’ constructing dwellings near bus depots, truck terminals, and railway station areas to reduce travel time and costs while promoting public transport usage.
Project 5: Bamandongri Railway Station
The 27-km-long Nerul/Seawoods-Uran Rail Corridor, developed by CIDCO, includes 10 railway stations completed in two phases. Phase one, covering 12 km, involves routes like Seawoods-Kharkopar and Belapur-Sagarsangam. Among the proposed five stations, the work on two has been finished. Targhar station and Gavan station are set to be completed by mid-2024.
Project 6: Two Bridges by MSRDC
To ease traffic congestion on the Sion-Panvel highway, MSRDC is constructing two new three-lane bridges near Vashi creek. Anticipated to be operational by the third quarter of 2024, these bridges are expected to facilitate smoother vehicular movement during peak hours, costing an estimated Rs 775 crore.

]]>The work on the flyover near the Turbhe station started from Friday. Consequently, the closure of this road for vehicular movement resulted in the provision of three alternative routes. This sudden change affected the commuters in the initial three days. Around Saturday night, the Deputy Commissioner of Police was present at the site himself. Although such circumstances are rare, expectations have been raised for changes in transportation due to road closures. This has been conveyed to the Traffic Police.
The construction work of the flyover near the Turbhe station commenced on Friday. Consequently, the closure of these roads for vehicular movement has led to the provision of three alternative routes. This sudden alteration in the usual routes necessitates cooperation from the drivers and the police for a few days. However, as the work began on Friday, the impact of the closure started showing from Saturday and Sunday, with congestion significantly increasing during those times. This resulted in alternative routes and even in this area facing congestion.
Due to the increased number of vehicles on Saturday and Sunday nights, traffic congestion occurred at times despite police arrangements. As a result, wherever traffic congestion occurred due to the increased number of vehicles, the traffic police immediately diverted the flow. As per the information provided by the traffic police, frequent changes in routes have been updated, and the Traffic Police are actively working in areas where route changes are occurring. This situation is expected to improve in a few days, and regular transportation will resume. – Tirupati Kakade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Department.
So far, over 20 people, more than 40, have been permanently disabled while crossing the Thane-Belapur Road from Turbhe Station to Turbhe Store. Therefore, numerous protests have taken place to demand footpaths for crossing the road safely. Finally, after 20 years, the flyover is standing tall.

The final 101-kilometer stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is set to be completed in the coming year, specifically by 2024. Among these, the Bhadavli and Igatpuri stretches, spanning 23 kilometers, could potentially open for traffic in February. This information has gained prominence in the Times of India.
The Samruddhi Mahamarg connects the state capital Mumbai to Nagpur, covering a total distance of 701 kilometers. This will significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. The stretch from Igatpuri to Aamane, a 78-kilometer stretch, might open for traffic in July 2024. Fifteen bridges are currently under construction in this stretch. Construction has also commenced on a bridge in Shahapur, which is 84 meters high and 1.8 kilometers long, as per information provided by the MSRDC officials.
Two sections of 600 kilometers of the Samruddhi Mahamarg have already begun. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the 520-kilometer stretch from Nagpur to Shirdi in December 2022. The stretch between Shirdi and Bhadavli was slated to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in May 2023.
Once the 23-kilometer stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is operational, commuters from Mumbai and Thane can access the Samruddhi Mahamarg through the Igatpuri connector. After the completion of the work on the tunnels on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, from Kasara to Igatpuri and then the Igatpuri stretch, the 78-kilometer stretch will be open for traffic.
The final completion of the Samruddhi Mahamarg will significantly impact the travel time once the last phase between Mumbai and Nagpur is completed. The MSRDC is expected to enhance amenities on this expressway, offering assurance to travelers using this Mahamarg.

]]>Work on the Coastal Road in Mumbai has commenced. Presently, a coastal road is being constructed in Navi Mumbai as well. According to available information, a new coastal road is set to be developed from Kharghar to Ulwe via Sidhco. Notably, funds have been allocated in the 2023-24 budget for these roads, with ₹205.49 crore allocated for this purpose. This development has raised hopes of a significant reduction in traffic congestion in Navi Mumbai.
This road will enable smoother connectivity from Kharghar Node to Ulwe and the JNPT port, facilitating easier access to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. Currently, reaching JNPT and the Navi Mumbai International Airport from Kharghar involves a considerable detour via Belapur Node. Therefore, this coastal road holds immense significance for the residents of Navi Mumbai.
According to media reports, this coastal road will span a total length of 10.10 kilometers, featuring six lanes. This will further improve connectivity between Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai. Importantly, the necessary permissions from the CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) have been obtained for this project. Hence, there is hope for swift progress in the implementation of this project.

]]>Thane: For the ambitious elevated road connecting Kalyan-Ahmednagar National Highway, Kalyan-Badlapur State Highway, and the link road to old Pune, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has granted administrative clearance of ₹642.98 crores. Presently, from Vitthalwadi to Kalyan, it takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes due to the absence of a direct route. This new elevated road is expected to reduce this time to around five minutes. This road will have two railway crossings, connecting Vitthalwadi to Kalyan-Ahmednagar State Highway, allowing seamless passage over the Waldhuni River.
The lack of connections between state highways and national highways often results in longer travels, requiring additional fuel, time, and effort. Kalyan and Ulhasnagar are adjacent cities but seem distant due to geographical factors, the Waldhuni River, and the absence of a direct route. Travelling from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar requires taking the Kalyan-Badlapur State Highway, which adds to the distance. The National Highway, Mahamarg, and Old Pune Link Road are not interconnected, necessitating the idea of a direct elevated road, conceived by local representative Dr. Shrikant Shinde. Consequently, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has prepared a detailed blueprint for this purpose.
The project will join two railway routes and three highways, requiring an immediate ₹642.98 crore administrative approval from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority board. The total land required for this project is around 38,160 square meters, of which 23,951 square meters have already been acquired. The surplus land will be managed through Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), a process initiated through the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. This road, once operational, will reduce the time taken from 40 to 60 minutes to a mere five minutes.
The Route: The road will commence near the Vitthalwadi crematorium and descend at the Palm Resort on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar highway. Spanning a total length of 1,654 meters, it will have four elevated pads. A separate pedestrian pathway of 240 meters will lead from Palm Resort to the Kalyan railway station. Another pathway of 520 meters will connect the railway station to the elevated road. From the Palm Resort to the Shri Bhavani Chowk and from there to the Bhawani Chowk square, two double-lane pathways of 220 meters will be constructed. There will be a double-lane path of 220 meters from the Vitthalwadi station to the Vitthalwadi crematorium.
The project involves the development of four elevated roads over the Kalyan-Murbad Road and Pune Link Road. Dams will be built on both sides of the Waldhuni River, stretching 18 meters, and the lands over the railway pathways will be developed. Additionally, a protective wall of 1,490 meters will be constructed along the Waldhuni River. Enhancements are planned for Bhavani Chowk in Kalyan, Jagdish Dairy on the Kalyan-Badlapur Road, and the Vitthalwadi railway station vicinity.

]]>To facilitate the development of Mumbai city, it is necessary not only to focus on projects solely for Mumbai but also to undertake comprehensive development in the surrounding cities. Therefore, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and other institutions are collaborating with central, state, and local government bodies in these development endeavors.
Over the past few years, many major projects have been initiated. Presently, the work on these projects is nearly complete, while some have been entirely finished. Hence, there is a possibility that during the coming year, these projects might see their culmination through inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several projects are in progress, and their ground-breaking ceremonies will be conducted by the Prime Minister. The excitement for the inauguration of projects in Mumbai and nearby cities will intensify during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The inauguration of which projects will take place?
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is considered the largest project currently underway in Maharashtra. With the presence and involvement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, this project holds great significance. This six-lane route spans 21.8 kilometers, linking Mumbai to Nhava Sheva directly. The project cost amounts to 17,843 crores and construction commenced in 2018. Presently, only the finishing touches such as painting and electrical poles are pending, which will be completed soon. Once inaugurated, it will be India’s longest sea bridge, significantly reducing travel times between Navi Mumbai Airport, JNPT, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Mumbai-Goa Highway to just 20 minutes.
Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 1
The construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road, from South Mumbai’s Marine Drive to Kandivali, is in progress through the Versova Link. This Phase 1 stretch from Princess Street Flyover to Worli Sea Link spans 10.58 kilometers with four lanes. The road includes underground routes, three interchanges, and the construction of several flyovers. The work for the Coastal Road began in October 2018, and presently, 85% of the work is completed. It is estimated that this segment’s completion will coincide with the beginning of the new year, leading to its formal inauguration.
Aqua Line of Mumbai Metro 3
During the previous government’s tenure, the most talked-about and debated project was Metro 3, known as the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ route. This underground metro project in the central part of Mumbai, from Cuffe Parade to Colaba, marks the completion of the first phase. This phase includes the stretch from Cuffe Parade to Wadala-Kurla Complex, which is 95% complete. This 17-kilometer line connects key stations like Cuffe Parade, MMRCL, Marol Naka, International Airport, Sahar Road, Domestic Airport, Santacruz, Vidyanagari, and BKC. The completion of the first phase is at 90%, and its inauguration will happen soon.
In addition to these city-centered projects, there are others related to Navi Mumbai, Dombivali, Bhiwandi, and Thane. While some are pending completion, a few have already concluded, awaiting formal inauguration for public use. Chief Ministerial orders have ensured that these lines are open to the public before their official inauguration.
Navi Mumbai Metro
The construction of the Navi Mumbai Metro, connecting Belapur to Pendhar Road, is completed, allowing its opening for the public. This 11-kilometer metro line had been in the pipeline for twelve years. It has several stations along its path, with this stretch now ready for use, scheduled for formal inauguration by the Prime Minister.
Belapur CBD to Nerul to Uran Railway Line
In March 2017, construction began on a new railway line to connect Belapur and Nerul stations in the Harbour Line to Uran city. The total cost for this new corridor is 1782 crores. The first phase, from Belapur to Nerul to Kharkopar, was opened in November 2018. The railway line to Uran is ready, with security clearances also issued. With some minor finishing touches pending, this line could commence shortly. Consequently, the formal inauguration of this railway line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected in the coming year.
Digha Station
Construction of the Airoli-Kalwa corridor commenced in 2016. One station within this project, situated between Airoli and Thane stations, named Digha, has been completed. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has initiated this project, and while station construction is complete, it awaits formal inauguration by the Prime Minister.
Mora Gaon Mahankoli Bridge
Constructed by the MMRDA, this bridge from Dombivali to Mahankoli in Bhiwandi has seen completion of all but 98% of the work. Spanning 1.2 kilometers, the bridge construction began in 2017. Presently, it is ready for use, connecting Dombivali to Thane in just 20 minutes.
As these projects have reached completion, critics have sometimes taken issue with their formal inaugurations, pointing out government delays. Aditya Thackeray has also highlighted these projects, giving the government a reminder through a tweet. Some projects, although ready, have been held back from inauguration. Therefore, citizens are restless, but the information from sources suggests that these projects will indeed be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the early months of the new year.
These infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating transportation issues and other challenges in Mumbai have faced numerous delays. These setbacks were due to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, land acquisition issues, and economic problems. However, these projects have now reached their final stages, and their inauguration is set to occur in January, February, and March, initiating a lottery of projects for Mumbai’s citizens as the new year begins.
Due to various government-initiated projects, property values in areas like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Ulwe, Uran, Pushpak Nagar, Taloja, among others, are expected to rise significantly. This is a golden opportunity for homebuyers. ]]>The Ghotsi-Kasara-Igatpuri, Saralambhe, Phalegaon to Bhiwandi-Vadpe-Amne is a 49-kilometer road that traverses through Shahapur taluka. In this road network, the construction of the flyover between Shelwali and Shere villages on the Shahapur-Kinhavali route had commenced. The completion of this work has resulted in the opening of the flyover for transportation.
The roads between Shelwali and Phalegaon have been deemed significant for completion. This flyover will allow vehicles on the prosperous highway to travel from Nashik-Ghotsi to Bhiwandi through the flyover. One side of this flyover has an elevated structure, and as a significant part of this elevation is made up of solid rock, it poses a challenging situation for contractors during excavation and road construction. The government plans to open the toll gates on the prosperous highway in Shahapur taluka within two to three months. Many citizens from the villages along the prosperous highway in Shahapur taluka are using these completed toll gates for transportation.

]]>To streamline traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, 95% of the work on both viaducts, with a 23-meter depth, has been completed. These viaducts, not only the tallest in India but globally significant, feature four lanes.
The Pune-Mumbai Expressway and Pune-Mumbai National Highway converge near Khalapur Toll Plaza but diverge at the Khopoli exit. The exit at the Khopoli exit is parallel to the viaduct and supports 10 lanes of traffic.
Due to steep slopes and monsoon-induced landslides, the ghats and inclines here are quite challenging. This necessitates the closure of a lane on the hillside during the monsoons, causing congestion on the Mumbai-bound side. To mitigate this, the MSRDC has taken charge of the 13.3-kilometer ‘Missing Link’ project from the Khopoli exit to Kusgaon.
What makes this viaduct special?
This viaduct, constructed at a cost of 6695 crores, is noteworthy in its own right. It boasts a depth of 23.75 meters, making it the tallest viaduct globally. Strategies to prevent fire incidents have been devised for this viaduct. The elevation of this viaduct will significantly reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Pune.
In preparation for potential landslides, rock bolts have been placed strategically within the viaduct, and every 300 meters features an exit point road. Moreover, a high-pressure water-mix system will be promptly deployed in the event of a fire.

]]>Mumbai Flyover Speed Limits: We have experienced that traffic police enforce penalties for driving at high speeds. But do you know how fast you should drive on which road?
Vehicle Speed Limits: If you plan to drive on Mumbai’s roads, it is essential to check the speed limits of your vehicle. Otherwise, traffic police can issue you a fine.
New Speed Limits on 9 Main Roads: New speed limits have been enforced on nine major roads in Mumbai. These speed limits will be applicable to all types of vehicles driving within Mumbai’s limits. Additional Commissioner of Police, M. Ram Kumar, provided this information.
From Haji Ali Junction to Mahalaxmi Railway Station: From Shahid Bhagat Singh Road to PD Mello Road, and from Godrej Junction to Opera House, Maharshi Road will be limited to 50 kilometers per hour. From Keshavrao Khade Road to Haji Ali Junction up to Mahalaxmi Railway Station will also have a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour.
Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli: The Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road from Bindu Madhav Chowk to Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar Chowk has been specified with a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour. At that time, from BKC Diamond Junction to MTNL Junction on Avenue-1, the speed limit will be 60 kilometers per hour.
JVLR and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road: The speed limit has been set to 70 kilometers per hour on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. However, to prevent accidents on JVLR, the speed limit on ramps and flyovers has been limited to 30 kilometers per hour.
Chembur’s Veer Jijamata Bhosale Flyover: Chembur’s Veer Jijamata Bhosale Flyover will have a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, while the speed limit on ascending and descending from the flyover will be 40 kilometers per hour. Amar Mahal Flyover: The Amar Mahal Flyover will have a speed limit of 70 kilometers per hour, while ascending and descending from the flyover will be limited to 40 kilometers per hour. However, the senior traffic officials have currently refused to open this route for trials.
Indicator Boards Needed: Various reactions are surfacing on social media. Traffic police should introduce uniform speed limits throughout the city. Shouldn’t each road have a different speed limit? The police will provide information regarding speed limits on each road and flyover.
How to Drive? The police strictly enforce traffic rules. No exceptions will be entertained from the rules. Will vehicles be driven at high speeds on pothole-ridden roads, speed breakers, ferryways, and roads with pedestrians in Mumbai? This question is being pondered upon.
