Mumbai: Whether the Coastal Road will open for traffic in January or February is still uncertain. However, a new dispute has arisen regarding toll taxes on the Coastal Road. BMC Commissioner I.S. Chahal told Navbharat Times that the government will decide whether toll taxes will be levied. When asked if BMC would send a proposal to the government for toll taxes, he mentioned that BMC wouldn’t send any such proposal. In the proposal sent by the BMC to the Central Environmental Department on May 11, 2017, for CRZ clearance, it is clearly stated that the Coastal Road will be a freeway, and there will be no tolls. MLA Aditya Thackeray alleged that BMC has plans to impose toll taxes on the Coastal Road. He held Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BJP responsible for this. SP MLA Rais Shaikh also expressed displeasure over this.

May open in February The deadline for the construction of the Coastal Road has been extended several times. The BMC planned to open one lane of the Coastal Road for traffic by December 2023, but this won’t happen. Chief Minister Shinde recently announced that one lane of the Coastal Road would be opened in January 2024. However, BMC officials say that as 83% of the work has been completed, it will be challenging to achieve this in January. One lane could be opened in February 2024.

Ease of travel from Marine Drive to Worli The Coastal Road project extends from Marine Drive to Worli, which will be connected further with the Worli-Bandra Sea Link. This will link South Mumbai to Western Mumbai and beyond, connecting Dahisar to Bhayandar. Started in 2018, the estimated cost of this 10.58 km-long project has escalated from Rs. 8,000 crores to over Rs. 13,000 crores. The journey from Worli Sea Face to Marine Drive, which currently takes 30 minutes, is estimated to take an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
