The new Thane station gains momentum, work on three routes begins, when will the station start? Find out.

The development work at the new Thane railway station has gained pace. Work on connecting three routes to the station has commenced. The station is slated to be ready for passengers by December 2025.

Thane: Under the Thane Smart City project of the Thane Municipal Corporation, progress has been made on the work at the new Thane railway station. The issue of transferring the Mental Hospital’s land to the new Thane railway station gained traction in March 2023. However, the state government’s approval to transfer 14.83 acres of land to the municipal corporation for free enabled the project to start within six months. As a result, work on connecting the station to three elevated routes began, and as of December 2023, 21% of this project has been completed. The process of finalizing the agreement with the railway administration is in its last phase, and by December 2025, the railway station is expected to be ready for commuters.

Efforts to reduce the number of passengers at the Thane railway station of Central Railways have led to the initiation of construction for the new Thane railway station on the Mental Hospital grounds. Approximately ₹144.80 crores were allocated for this project under the Smart City initiative.

Approval for the new Thane railway station has been granted by the railways, resulting in the commencement of construction. Efforts had previously been made for eight years by the Thane Municipal Corporation to transfer this land from the state government to the municipal corporation. Finally, on March 3, 2023, the High Court gave approval to transfer 14.83 acres of land for this hospital, allowing the direct commencement of the new Thane railway station project.

Estimated Cost Around ₹144 Crores

The estimated cost for the project is approximately ₹144.80 crores, with bids initially invited for ₹119.24 crores. The GST for this project, excluding ₹142 crores, has been approved. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has shown commitment to this project and ensured continuous support. Under the guidance of local representatives and Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, work on this project has commenced under the Smart City project’s executive officer Sandeep Malvi.
