The Virar-Alibaug Corridor has received a significant update! With 93% of the land cleared, construction set to begin in two phases; the journey time is anticipated to reduce from five hours to a mere two hours.

The long-pending Virar-Alibaug Corridor project on paper is finally set to kick-off by 2024. The land acquisition work, crucial to initiate the significant MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region) project, has reached its final stages. According to senior officials of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the target is to complete 80% of the land acquisition by the end of December.

By the forthcoming year, the entire required land for the project is expected to be under the municipal corporation from March to April. About 128 km of corridor work has gained momentum in Palghar, Thane, and Raigad. In Palghar, approximately 93% of the land has been cleared. With land acquisition work underway in Thane and Raigad, the corridor construction is set to commence and continue until 2024.

The construction work will take place in two phases. The corridor work will be split into two parts: one section spans 98 km, while the other covers 29 km. This division aims to provide easy access to citizens from one part of the MMR to the other. The government had planned a 126-kilometer corridor about 11 years ago to facilitate this. However, due to various reasons, the project could not kickstart. Now, the government has expedited the process to commence the corridor work shortly.

Ring Road infrastructure development is also underway in the MMR to complement the Virar-Alibaug project. All current projects in MMR will be integrated. This integration includes other projects like Virar-Alibaug Corridor, Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbor Link Project, Shivdi-Varoli Connector, Vasai-Bhayandar Bridge, Coastal Road, Versova-Worli Sea Link, and Worli-Varoli Sea Link. The Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbor Link Project is expected to open for vehicular movement within the next two to three months.

The Virar-Alibaug travel time is expected to reduce to just two hours due to the corridor construction. Currently, the journey from Virar to Alibaug takes around four to five hours. The first Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 128 km corridor was prepared in 2016. After various situational changes in recent years, the DPR has undergone significant modifications. The responsibility for the corridor construction, previously with MMRDA, has now shifted to MSRDC, primarily concerning the land acquisition process.

The Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor is divided into two phases: Phase-1 spans from Navghar to Balavli, covering 96.41 kilometers of Expressway. For the first phase, an estimated 1,347 hectares of land will be required, costing approximately 40,000 crore INR. Phase-2 covers from Balavli to Alibaug, constituting a 29.9 km Expressway.

To expedite the growth in the MMR, the Virar-Alibaug Corridor was conceptualized. Although faced with several challenges, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been instrumental in linking the MMR Ring Road project. Following his directive, the project was handed over from MMRDA to MSRDC for seamless integration.

Having experience in handling significant urban development projects over the past decade, the Chief Ministers have ambitious plans for more significant projects. MSRDC completed the land acquisition process for the prosperous corridor swiftly. With work started within a few months, the expectation is that the project will not face any delays.
